We Start With the Door in Our Hands
Bitblitzcom works on garage doors in Long Beach, and every visit starts the same way. Opener released, door lifted by hand, stopped at three heights on the way up. Before we look at anything else, we find out what the door weighs in practice.
We are on Spring St in the 90805 ZIP, which we did not choose for the joke but have stopped apologising for.
Why Balance Is the First Question
A garage door is a counterweight machine. The springs above the opening store enough energy to offset the entire weight of the door, so a correctly set door is effectively weightless. Lift it to waist height, let go, and it should stay there.
That is not a nice-to-have. It is the design assumption every other component was built around. The opener is sized for a weightless door. The rollers, hinges and track are sized for a door that moves evenly. Take the balance away and every one of those parts starts absorbing a load it was never specified for.
What We Keep Getting Called For
Slow doors. Openers that stop halfway and reverse. Openers that were replaced last year and are now doing it again. Grinding at the top of travel. A door that bangs down the last foot.
Those are five different complaints and they are frequently one fault. The springs have relaxed, the door is heavy, and everything downstream is being punished for it.
Turns, Not Feel
Torsion springs are wound to a number. Roughly one turn per foot of door travel plus half a turn, so a standard seven-foot door lands near seven and a half. That gets you close. The door itself gets you the rest of the way, because the real setting is whichever one makes it hold still at waist height.
Plenty of doors in this city are running on tension somebody set by feel, or on springs sized for the door before an insulation kit was added to it.
The Line We Hold
We will happily walk a homeowner through the balance test itself. It costs nothing, it takes ninety seconds, and more people should run it.
We will not walk anybody through adjusting the springs. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to break an arm, and it releases all of it if a winding bar comes out of the cone. That is where the serious injuries in this trade happen.
